Wide consultation
East Riding of Yorkshire Council conducted extensive consultations with St Anne’s staff and NHS inclusion teams, to design a school that was safe and secure, yet accessible and easy for pupils to navigate. The nurturing environment is intended to support children with complex educational needs and allow pupils to make their own choices, decisions and allow independence as they prepare for adulthood.

Outstanding facilities
The new, state-of-the-art school has two teaching blocks for upper and lower school and a central core, housing a playground, sensory garden, and an allotment where children can learn how to grow plants and vegetables. Wide ranging facilities also include: sensory rooms, sensory integration room and rebound therapy room, hydrotherapy pool, a multipurpose hall and communal dining/social areas. This outstanding facility also provides year-round residential support with 18 bedrooms for pupils, 3 for staff and a range of support spaces, dining and lounge areas.

Appleton Court
Also located on the Boothferry Road site, with separate independent access, is Appleton Court supported housing - a development of residential apartments for adults with varying levels of care needs.
There are 44 apartments built around a central courtyard and gardens; 36 one-bed apartments and eight two-bed apartments offer independent living with communal lounge and gardens and access to 24-hour on-site care and support. This open plan accommodation comprises kitchens with rise and fall worktops, bathrooms with level access showers, and a private balcony or terrace. Specific attention to detail has been considered to enable independence, including dementia friendly colours, fully accessible space standards, and braille signage.

Construction
Construction began towards the end of 2020 on the old Hessle High School site on Boothferry Road in Hessle. Completion of the earthworks and foundations was followed by the steel frame construction of both the single and three-storey buildings. Drainage to the building followed along with concrete slabs to the school and the supported housing. The roof was added, with external walls being constructed and windows then installed. Takeover of the development was achieved in summer 2022.
