Low Carbon Materials (LCM) is a climate tech company, and Earthshot finalist (2022), focusing on the development of low-carbon, next-generation solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of common construction materials including asphalt and concrete.
Dr Lian Hutchings is Head of Growth at Low Carbon Materials (LCM), a role that focuses on commercial and business development activities but also spans sustainability, products and marketing and comms. Lian joined LCM in November 2022 after “retiring” from a career in Higher Education with 29 years in the Department of Chemistry at Durham University as a lecturer and professor.

This presentation will focus on ACLA, LCM’s carbon negative aggregate. ACLA is a carbon negative aggregate which, when used as a partial substitute for quarried stone, can enable both net zero asphalt and net zero concrete. ACLA was developed by LCM and tested in asphalt with the support of, and funding from, National Highways including three successful trials on the Strategic Road Network. ACLA has also been deployed successfully in 40+ commercial surfacing schemes for both public and private sector clients since its launch in 2024. Since that time LCM has partnered with local authorities (and their supply chain) to help decarbonise their highways maintenance programmes.
This presentation will explain how ACLA is carbon negative and share user case studies for ACLA in net zero asphalt, including two highways resurfacing schemes for East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Moreover, we will report the test results of ACLA in net zero concrete and the results of initial trials in concrete.
Who should attend?
This webinar will be of interest to highway engineers, local authorities, National Highways teams, asset managers, sustainability professionals, contractors, asphalt and concrete producers, procurement specialists, and anyone involved in delivering lower-carbon infrastructure. Attendees will gain practical insights from real-world highways projects and the latest developments in net-zero asphalt and concrete technologies.
