RG Carter deliver GP Transformational Hub at Foundry 1
A major milestone in local healthcare infrastructure has been reached with the completion of the new GP Transformational Hub at Foundry 1 in Sheffield. The £8,122,408 development, delivered by contractor R G Carter through YORbuild3, brings together two existing GP surgeries under one purpose-built, modern facility designed to expand and improve patient services.
The two‑storey medical hub provides a combination of shared and dedicated consultation and treatment rooms, staff areas, back‑of‑house facilities, and administrative offices. The building covers 1,191m², excluding landscaped external areas.

Constructed using traditional building methods, the hub features piled foundations, a suspended ground floor slab, a steel frame and composite decking, along with a brick façade complemented by curtain‑glazed entrance areas. The site presented several engineering challenges, including a substantial slope requiring levelling and the installation of retaining walls. The construction team also encountered remnants of historic cellars and drainage from properties destroyed during the Second World War, which required careful management during the build.
The new hub marks a significant step forward in improving accessibility, capacity, and quality of care for the community, offering a modern environment for both patients and healthcare professionals.

Neal Wheatley, Director and General Manager for R G Carter, said, “We are extremely proud of our long-standing relationship with the NHS and our continued work to enhance healthcare facilities for local communities. In partnership with Sheffield City Council, we’re delighted to see the much-needed new General Practitioners Surgery at Spital Street now complete. This facility will provide vital benefits for patients and support the dedicated staff who deliver essential services every day.”
Jackie Sharpe, Associate, Project Management, Turner & Townsend, said, “We are extremely proud to support the Sheffield City Council and the ICB/NHS with the delivery of this fantastic facility. It’s been an enjoyable project, working with a highly engaged client and responsive contractor, to deliver this together. This project is a testimony to the benefits of building strong relationships with all parties to get the best results”
