Robertson on track for bike community
A much-loved community BMX track in Chesterfield has been given a new lease of life thanks to a YOR4Good-funded site initiative delivered by Robertson Construction Yorkshire and East Midlands.
Robertson was appointed to deliver the New Teaching Block at Bingley Grammar School through the YORbuild3 Medium Works framework. As part of its social value commitments, the contractor identified an opportunity to support the refurbishment of the ageing Chesterfield BMX track at Ringwood Park, helping to ensure the facility remains safe, accessible and sustainable for future generations.

Delivered entirely as a Benefit in Kind contribution, the project brought together labour, materials and supply chain expertise from Robertson, with a total value of £33,902.43.
The track is a key community asset that has served local riders for more than 40 years and continues to attract around 30,000 visits each year. Home to Chesterfield BMX Racing Club and its members, the facility supports a wide range of users, from beginners and families to competitive racers, schools and disability-inclusive cycling groups from across Derbyshire and the Midlands.

The refurbishment addressed a number of critical issues that threatened the long-term future of the track. Deteriorating surfaces, drainage problems, an outdated start hill and a non-operational start gate had led to significant safety concerns, with British Cycling deeming the start hill and gate unsafe for racing and coaching activities.
Working closely with stakeholders throughout the project, Robertson coordinated specialist contractors and supply chain partners to deliver a comprehensive programme of improvements. The works have restored the track to a safe and fully functioning condition, allowing the club to continue delivering coaching sessions, competitions, holiday activities and inclusive cycling opportunities for the local community. The works delivered by Robertson included:
- Removal and re-installation of the third berm
- Design, supply, and installation of a new BMX start gate to replace the unsafe existing gate
- Coordination with council and specialist contractor Biketrack.org on drainage and wider refurbishment works
The initiative reflects Robertson’s wider commitment to strengthening community facilities, improving local environments and supporting grassroots sport in the regions where it operates.

By safeguarding a facility used by tens of thousands of people each year, the project is helping to create lasting social value, supporting physical activity, skills development, positive youth engagement and community wellbeing across Chesterfield and the surrounding area.
Libby Hawkins, Club Manager and Head Coach at Chesterfield BMX Racing Club, said: “I just wanted to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone at Robertson and the YOR4Good Fund who have been involved in supporting the refurbishment of Chesterfield BMX Track. The refurbished facility will allow us to continue introducing children to cycling, developing young riders, supporting competitive BMX racing and providing a safe, positive and welcoming place for people in our community to be active.”
