Major milestone for £86.9m project
One of the East Riding’s most significant highway infrastructure projects has reached a major milestone with traffic restrictions being removed in a phased approach over the next few weeks, and the new road layout at Jock’s Lodge now opening up to road users, following extensive improvement works. The £86.9 million A164 and Jock’s Lodge Improvement Scheme was procured through YORcivil Major Works framework and is the largest construction project ever undertaken by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, delivering major upgrades to one of the region’s busiest transport corridors.
Located on the key routes linking Hull, Beverley and York, the scheme has been designed to reduce congestion, improve journey reliability and support economic growth across the wider East Riding. Construction has involved substantial improvements to both the A164 and A1079, creating additional capacity and enhancing connectivity for residents, businesses and commuters.
Delivered by contractor GRAHAM on behalf of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the scheme has transformed a long-standing traffic bottleneck and will help provide smoother, safer and more reliable journeys for all road users. More than 660,000 tonnes of earth have been moved during the works, alongside the installation of over 7.5km of road surfacing, more than 3km of drainage infrastructure and the planting of around 128,000 trees and shrubs.
While some final landscaping and seasonal planting work will continue, the opening of the new road layout marks a significant achievement for everyone involved in the project and for the communities that will benefit from the improved transport links for years to come.
The successful completion of the scheme demonstrates the value of collaborative delivery across the public and private sectors and highlights how strategic infrastructure investment can improve connectivity, support economic development and create long-term benefits for local communities.
Councillor Michael Lee, the council’s cabinet member for housing, infrastructure and communications, said: “This has been a monumental task for our project team at the council and for our contractor GRAHAM, but they have done an amazing job to deliver this impressive new highway.”
